Finished The Bloody Chamber!

Well, the story anyway! Not sure what to write or where to start! I thought the story was interesting and how Carter has used Blue Beard as an inspiration. When I say she's used it as an inspiration, she's basically rewrote the story and added a few minor details here and there! My favourite part was definitely when she entered the chamber, however, when the Marquais arrived home and the girl doesn't even think about escaping and takes orders over the phone, i find the story rather ridiculous! I'll update this at another time with a little more of a response!

  1. I also think it's interesting that Carter has used Blue Beard as an inspiration - I think there's an element of 'tales told over time' and 'stories passed down from generation to generation' - In the fairytale style, the changes between Blue Beard and the Bloody Chamber, in a way, can be seen to represent the variations that come about as a result of the story being told repeatedly. This also ties in with the gothic element as some details has been obscured...also, on your point of things being ridiculous (I agree by the way!) maybe it's as if as the stories have been told repeatedly, details have become more exaggerated over time (or at least that might be the effect Carter is trying to create?!)

  2. I never actually realised that Blue beard was a story - I always thought he was a pirate...with a blue beard!
To be honest, I always wonder what possessed Carter come up with these stories. Sure it's all about context with women's rights etc.. but surely she could have conveyed that without the need to include torture chambers and pervy old men?!
